Haena Yoo (b. 1990, Seoul, South Korea) is an installation artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. She received her BFA at Ewha Woman's University in 2013 and is an MFA candidate at Art Center College of Design. Her primary media are sculpture and installation using a wide variety of materials. She also works with video, drawing, and collage through a multi-disciplinary practice which engages the poetic languages to create beauty in personal banality.
Yoo’s experimental practice draws on the legacies of constructivism and involves contemporary visual and material culture. Her early installation works are immersive dark-room environments with video, fabric, and colorful light. In these projects, Yoo experimented with methods of interpretation between internal and external space. Using meterials such as paper, boxes, plastic bags, fabric, pipe, and electric fans, she transforms these everyday objects into abstract marks and guides phenomenological compositions in space. Her intricate works consist of unexpected and carefully arranged combinations of materials.
Yoo is interested in prosaic questions such as the conditioning of her own work by her origins and culture. She constructs site-specific installations that question the boundaries of identity in the development of an individual personality. Her video installation “The Oxford Ave (2015)” is representative of her questions concerning the hybridization of cultures.
In the artist’s words, “Through observing the trajectory of my trivial objects or scenes I am witnessing everyday, I search unknown spaces that exist inside of myself. It could be said that fantasy, memory and unconsciousness are invisible but vivid spaces that constantly unleash power to myself and the material world even when I am not aware of it.
“Generally, my material practice is considered in order to engage with existing places. In that sense, my artwork is like putting a layer of psychological space upon physical space. Playing with architectural elements between the physical and psychological space, I offer my own dreamlike space to welcoming viewers.”
